CSIS Argentina Office
|
The office is located at the premises of the Consejo Argentino para las Relaciones Internacionales (CARI), the most important private institution in Argentina for the development of international relations. It was opened in 1995 to provide local support to the U.S.-Argentine Caucus. In August 1997, with the object of providing a counterpart to the CSIS U.S. Congressional Study Group (CSG), this office launched the Argentine branch of the CSG, which is currently formed by 10 senators and 6 representatives representing different districts and political parties. Two Argentine congressional delegations have traveled to Washington, in June 2001 and June 2002, and a new trip is scheduled for June 2004. A committee of staffers appointed by the branch members, and coordinated by the office director, holds meetings twice a month at the Chamber of Deputies. Bills before any of the two chambers of the Argentine Congress that may affect the bilateral relationship between Argentina and the United States, as well as multilateral schemes in which both countries are members, are considered by the committee.
CSIS, jointly with the Fundación Universitaria de Buenos Aires, conducts a program that sponsors U.S. congressional staff visits to Argentina. To date, seven trips have taken place and more than 40 staff members have traveled to the region and compose the CSIS "Staffer Alumni Group." The U.S. - Argentine Caucus, also headed by this office, is a private-sector leadership component focusing on bilateral business-to-business and public sector infrastructure issues. This group was established in 1995 to help address private sector concerns regarding US-Argentine relations. MERCOSUR Congressional Study Group To improve legislative ties between the two regions, the bipartisan MERCOSUR Congressional Study Group (CSG) was established in 1995, and remains the only group in the U.S. Congress dedicated to this region. Currently led by 16 members of Congress, the CSG pursues a wide-ranging portfolio of interests through congressional staff delegations and Capitol Hill briefings. The CSG has taken the lead in addressing the limited understanding of MERCOSUR within the Congress. This important group provides a unique policy forum through which the project can highlight and lead debate on the political, economic, and commercial issues affecting U.S.-MERCOSUR relations.
