August 13 U.S.-China Bilateral Relations
In partnership with Fudan University and The CNA Corporation, Pacific Forum CSIS will host the 8th dialogue on Sino-U.S. relations and regional security. We will examine new developments, energy and environmental issues, cross-Strait relations, Korean peninsula issues, Northeast Asia security architecture, the next U.S. administration and its China policy, and avenues for future cooperation.
August 10 Asia-Pacific Security Forum
In partnership with the Institute for Strategic and Development Studies (Philippines), the Asia Centre (France), and the Institute for National Policy Research (Taipei), the Pacific Forum CSIS will examine "Asian Elections 2007-2008: Regional Security Implications," while also speculating on how the upcoming U.S. Election will impact Asia.
June 18 New Power Dynamics in Southeast Asia: Issues for U.S. Policy
This project examines the impact of changing power relations in the Asia-Pacific region on Southeast Asian politics, security, and economics and the implication of these trends for U.S. policy. It will culminate with recommendations for a new U.S. administration following the 2008 elections. The June 2008 Honolulu meeting will be the wrap-up session for the project, and will include participants from throughout East Asia.
May 25 CSCAP WMD Study Group Meeting
This is the seventh meeting of the CSCAP Study Group on Countering the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Asia Pacific. This meeting will focus on recent developments in the UN/Global nonproliferation regimes with specific attention placed on safeguards and regional implementation of these regimes. We will also examine regional strategies for combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in support of our efforts to further develop the Handbook and Action Plan to Counter Proliferation in the Asia Pacific.
May 21 United States Security Strategy for East Asia
The Pacific Forum CSIS, along with four Washington DC-based institutions -- The Center for Naval Analyses(CNA), The Institute for Defense Analyses, INSS at National Defense University, and the Center for a New American Security -- will produce a written report on "United States Security Strategy for the East Asia and Pacific Region for a New Century and a New Administration." This effort is being co-chaired by James Kelly, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs and Kurt Campbell, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Defense for East Asia and the Pacific. The second meeting in this effort will be held May 21-22, (with an opening dinner May 20) in Honolulu, and will focus on U.S. alliances in Asia.
