April 24 Smart Power Speaker Series: "Smart Leadership: A Book Conversation"

Nye Jr., CSIS Trustee, Distinguished Service Professor from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government; Susan Eisenhower, Chairman of Leadership and Public Policy Programs at The Eisenhower Institute; David Sanger, White House Correspondent from The New York Times; and Brent Scowcroft, CSIS Trustee and President of the Scowcroft Group for a discussion on Dr. Nye's new book, "The Powers to Lead," and how leadership is critical to the effective implementation of Smart Power.  Michael J. Green, Senior Advisor and Japan Chair at CSIS, chaired the session.  "The Powers to Lead" should be required reading for anyone interested in assessing the leadership qualities of CEOs, cabinet secretaries, or the next president of the United States.

April 24 The Challenge of Covering Presidential Elections

April 23 Statesmen's Forum: The Honorable Michael Mukasey, United States Attorney General
Attorney General Speech Audio (28:59 mp3) | Video (29:23 wmv) | Prepared Remarks | Transcript (pdf) Panel Discussion Audio | Video The Honorable Michael Mukasey, United States Attorney General, gave a speech on combating international organized crime entitled "Combating the Growing Threat of International Organized Crime." The speech was followed by a panel discussion. The panel featured John Pistole, deputy director of the FBI; Alice Fisher, Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division; and Julie Myers, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The panel offered remarks and took questions from the audience. Arnaud de Borchgrave, director and senior adviser in the CSIS Transnational Threats (TNT) Project introduced the Attorney General and moderated the panel discussion.
April 23 Global Space Development Summit
Description: To promote the coordination of global space exploration, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Chinese Society of Astronautics (CSA) co-hosted the first Global Space Development Summit on April 23-25 in Beijing, China. The Summit brought together space agency, industry, and political leaders to start exploring ways that nations can work together to provide for the greater global public good while respecting individual national constraints. The need to move beyong a complex web of tangled bilateral agreements to clear global multilateral cooperation is clear, and this Summit is an effort to further develop the path to making globalized space exploration a global public good. This Summit included panels to facilitate discussions to lead at first ad hoc cooperation, and ultimately to the creation of the governance structures that will be critical to making space exploration sustainable. 
April 21 Russian Energy Policy and Strategy in Europe
AUDIO (mp3, 01:56:48) Russian Energy Policy and Strategy in Europe   featuring   Vladimir Socor,   Senior fellow, Jamestown Foundation   The CSIS New European Democracies Project held a roundtable entitled “Russian Energy Policy and Strategy in Europe.” The event took place on Monday, April 21, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the 4th Floor Conference room of CSIS, located at 1800 K Street NW. The CSIS meeting provided a forum to discuss Russia’s evolving energy policy and its impact on European and Transatlantic stability. Summary of a discussion session led by Shahid Javed Burki on “Pakistan's Economy: Challenges and Opportunities”, on March 25, 2008 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).  Mr. Burkhi who currently serves as the Chairman of the Institute of Public Policy discussed the current state of Pakistan’s economy, including the likelihood that Pakistan will be to sustain the impressive GDP growth rate it has enjoyed since 2001 and the absence of the trickle down effect in Pakistan. April 21 Global Aging Forum: Why Social Security Reform Still Matters
With the long-term budget projections dominated by rising expenditures on Medicare and Medicaid, is Social Security reform really that important? Dr. Andrew Biggs, Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and former Principal Deputy Commissioner at the Social Security Administration, made the case that it matters a lot—and shareed his insights on how it might play out in the next administration.
April 18 Smart Power Speaker Series: "A Perfect Storm: The New Humanitarian Challenges of the 21st Century"
Video (01:30 wmv) | Audio (01:30 mp3) | Preparted Remarks (pdf) CSIS hosted Josette Sheeran, executive director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), for a discussion on the new humanitarian challenges in the 21st century.  Johanna Nesseth Tuttle, vice president for Strategic Planning at CSIS, chaired the session.  The UN WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organization.  Climate change, natural disasters, demographic trends, and soaring food prices all underpin mounting global food insecurity challenges.  Ms. Sheeran will discuss the "new face of hunger," its root causes, implications for malnutrition and stability, and the way forward.

Professor Anyang' Nyong'o, an eminent Kenyan political analyst, is currently secretary general of the ODM and formerly Minister of Planning.
