The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) is a public-private partnership comprised of five American states (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington) and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia as well as the Yukon Territory. Its mission is to foster sustainable economic development throughout the entire region (of approximately 18 million residents with an annual gross regional product of $697 billion). With the increasing preoccupation with security and the emerging response on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), cross-border regions can lead the way in building solutions and consensus for North American integration.
Matt Morrison, PNWER’s executive director, gave an overview of the organization, its priority areas and the impact of a structure which brings together both public and private leadership on a regular basis. The event was hosted by Christopher Sands, CSIS senior associate, with comments on the latest PNWER summit by Tanya Primiani, CSIS research associate.
