Description:

A presentation by Ambassador Daniel Fried, assistant secretary of state, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Amb. Fried addressed the possibility of democratic progress in Belarus and Ukraine's upcoming elections. A question and answer session followed his speech.

 Daniel Fried took the oath of office as assistant secretary of state on May 5, 2005. Before becoming assistant secretary, Fried served as special assistant to the president and senior director for European and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council (2001-2005). He served as ambassador to Poland (1997-2000), and on the staff of the NSC (1993-1997). During this period he has been active in designing U.S. policy on Euroatlantic security, including NATO enlargement and the Russia-NATO relationship.
