Nicholas Szechenyi is a deputy directory and fellow of the Japan Chair at CSIS, focusing on the policy debate in Japan and U.S.-Japan relations. Prior to joining CSIS, he was a news producer for Fuji Television in Washington, D.C., where he covered U.S. foreign policy and domestic politics and facilitated coverage of major events, including the elections of 2000 and 2004, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also covered 10 presidential trips overseas for summit meetings, including the G-8 and APEC meetings. In 2000, he served as editor of an annual overview of U.S.-Japan relations published by the Edwin O. Reischauer Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). From 1994 to 1998, he was a program associate at the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, where he administered more than 30 policy-oriented research projects on East Asian affairs. Szechenyi received an M.A. in international economics and Japan studies from SAIS in 2000 and a B.A. in Asian studies from Connecticut College in 1994. His recent publications include “A Turning Point for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces,” Washington Quarterly (Autumn 2006), and “Common Values: A New Agenda for U.S.-Japan Relations” (with Michael Green), Georgetown Journal of International Affairs (Summer/Fall 2006). He lived in Japan for six years and is fluent in Japanese. Nicholas Szechenyi recently published an article in TWQ, A Turning Point for Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
