Commander Daniel Murphy graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in oceanography and is a naval aviator. CDR Murphy has flown the U.S. Navy’s premier anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare helicopter, the SH-60B SEAHAWK, from nearly every class of navy ship. He has made operational deployments to the Western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf, including participating in Operations SOUTHERN WATCH, VIGILANT SENTINEL, and ENDURING FREEDOM, as well as contingency operations near the Taiwan Strait in 1996. For two years, he was the chairman of the USS KITTY HAWK Strike Group Sea Combat Planning Cell forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. Ashore, he has served as the flag aide to the deputy commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command; as an operational planning team lead in the Operations Directorate (J-3) at U.S. Central Command Headquarters; and most recently at the Pentagon, as a member of DEEP BLUE on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. CDR Murphy holds an M.A. in National Security Affairs/Middle East regional studies from the Naval Postgraduate School.
