In early 2005, Arturo Porzecanski ended three decades of work as an international economist on Wall Street, where he rose to become chief economist for emerging markets at several financial institutions, the latest being ABN AMRO. He is now devoted to teaching and research in international economics and finance and is affiliated with three universities: American University, as scholar of international finance; Columbia University, as adjunct professor of international affairs; and New York University, as adjunct professor of economics. One of the pioneers of emerging-markets research on Wall Street, Dr. Porzecanski is cited frequently by the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, and The Economist and by major Latin American newspapers, such as ClarÃn (Argentina), Estado de São Paulo (Brazil), and El Economista (Mexico). He is interviewed regularly by CNN, the BBC, Reuters, and Bloomberg and on radio stations in the Americas and Europe. Prior to joining ABN AMRO in July 2000, he served for six years as chief economist for the Americas at ING Barings. Earlier, he was chief emerging-markets economist at Kidder, Peabody & Co. (1992–1993); chief economist at Republic National Bank of New York (1989–1992); senior economist at J.P. Morgan (1977–1989); research economist at the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies in Mexico City (1975–1976); and visiting economist at the International Monetary Fund (1973). Dr. Porzecanski majored in economics at Whittier College in California, and then earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Americas Society. Born and raised in Uruguay, he lives in New York City and commutes to Washington, D.C. |
