Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1988 with a B.Sc. degree and from the University of Virginia in 2000 with a M.A. degree in Russian studies. His military assignments have included service with the 24th Infantry Division (1989–1992), including deployment to Saudi Arabia and Iraq for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and service with the 194th Armor Brigade (1993–1996). In 1996, Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton entered the Army’s Eurasian Foreign Area Officer training program, which took him to the Defense Language Institute for Russian language training, to the George C. Marshall Center for Eurasian area studies training and to the University of Virginia for graduate school. Upon completion of Foreign Area Officer training, he attended the German Armed Forces Staff College (2000–2002) and then worked as a theater/strategic planner and Central Asia desk officer at U.S. Central Command (2002–2005). From 2005 to 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton was deployed to Afghanistan, where he served as the chief of regional engagement for the U.S. headquarters there. Prior to his assignment to CSIS, he worked at the U.S. embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia, as chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation. |
