Donald Paul is founder and president of Energy and Technology Strategies, LLC. He is the former vice president and chief technology officer for the Chevron Corporation, retiring in 2008 after 33 years of service. During his career with Chevron, he held a variety of positions in technology, exploration, and production operations, and executive management, including president of Chevron’s Canadian subsidiary and vice president of technology and environmental affairs. As chief technology officer, he was involved in forming external research and development (R&D) partnerships for Chevron with major universities, national laboratories, governments, and businesses. He developed and implemented Chevron’s strategy to build cooperative partnerships with U.S. government agencies and national laboratories in energy R&D, advanced computing, and cyber security for oil and gas. In 1999, he formed Chevron Technology Ventures, Chevron’s venture capital investment subsidiary to engage in new technology business development for application to the energy industry.

Dr. Paul has participated in a number of public service roles, including as a member of the National Research Council, the 1997 Presidential Panel on Federal Energy R&D, and the 2007 landmark study by the National Petroleum Council for the U.S. secretary of energy. He continues to serve on a number of university and industry advisory boards on research and technology development. Dr. Paul is a native of Los Angeles and received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from MIT.
