Formerly a reporter with Reuters in Prague, subsequently bureau chief in Bratislava and later Moscow bureau chief for the Times of London, Robin Shepherd was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., from fall 2003 to spring 2004. There, he examined the impact on transatlantic relations of the May 2004 accession of eight former Communist nations to the European Union, a subject he continues to monitor closely. Shepherd is the author of Czechoslovakia: The Velvet Revolution and Beyond (Macmillan/St Martin's, 2000), which examines the first decade of transition in the former Czechoslovakia. He has also contributed to the Washington Post, the Spectator, the New Statesman, the Chicago Tribune, the Times of London, BBC World Service and CNN. He holds a B.A. in Russian language, history, and politics from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University College of London and a postgraduate degree in political theory from the London School of Economics. He speaks Russian, Czech, Slovak, and French.
