Col. Jeffrey B. Taliaferro is currently assigned as National Defense fellow at CSIS. Previously, he served as commander of the 28th Bombardment Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas, where he was responsible for all aspects of initial flight training for the B-1 bomber. Col. Taliaferro received his commission from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1989. He has served in a variety of flying positions including B-1 instructor pilot, USAF Weapons School instructor, and wing weapons officer, with combat tours in Operations DESERT FOX and ALLIED FORCE. While an Air Force intern, he worked on the Air Staff in the B-1 Acquisition Office (SAF/AQPB) and in Personnel Education and Training (AF/DPPE). He has also served on the U.S. Central Command staff (J5-P) as a strategic war planner. Col. Taliaferro is a command pilot with over 2,400 flying hours, including combat over Iraq and Serbia. He has earned several Air Force level awards including the Ira C. Eaker award for “Outstanding Airmanship,” the Curtis E. LeMay award for “Bomber Crew of the Year,” and the Robbie Risner award for “Most Outstanding Weapons Officer of the Year.” In addition to two Air Medals, he was personally recognized by the president of the United States during the 1999 State of the Union address for his combat actions. Col. Taliaferro holds an M.A. degree in organizational management from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; an M.S. degree in military operational art and science from the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell AFB, Alabama; and an M.S. degree in airpower art and science from the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, Maxwell AFB, Alabama. |
