Anne L. Armstrong, who was appointed a regent of Texas A&M University System in 1997 by then-governor George W. Bush, is currently CSIS Board of Trustee. She was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain (1976–1977) and chaired the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (1981–1990). Ambassador Armstrong was the first woman appointed counselor to the president with cabinet rank by Presidents Nixon and Ford (1973–1974). She was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan. Ambassador Armstrong is a former member of the Boards of Directors of American Express Company, Boise Cascade, and Halliburton Company; she now serves on the General Motors Corporate Advisory Council. Other memberships include the Council on Foreign Relations, Alfalfa Club, Founding Council of the Oxford Institute for American Studies, Council of American Ambassadors, and the American Academy of Diplomacy. Ambassador Armstrong is vice chairman of the American Associates of the Royal Academy of Arts and Citizen Regent Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution. She was a member of the Commission on the Organization of Government for the Conduct of Foreign Policy (Murphy Commission) (1973–1974) and of the Board of Overseers of the Hoover Institution (1978–1990, 1991–1997). She chaired the English-Speaking Union of the United States (1977–1980) and served as president of the Blair House Restoration Fund (1985–1991). Ambassador Armstrong’s numerous honorary degrees and awards include the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (1989); the International Citizen’s Award, San Antonio World Affairs Council (1993); and entry into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame (1986). |
