Jon Huenemann, an adjunct fellow with the CSIS Americas Program, is a principal in the International Department at Miller and Chevalier, Chartered. He is a trade, investment, and global markets policy expert with 25 years of experience, including nearly 16 in senior positions at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, where he held the rank of assistant U.S. trade representative, was a member of the Senior Executive Service, and was commended by the president and U.S. trade representative on numerous occasions. He was directly involved in negotiating and implementing five free trade agreements, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) trilateral and bilateral work programs and the U.S., Canadian, and Mexican effort to negotiate Chile’s accession to the NAFTA. He was also one of three senior negotiators that launched the effort to build the Free Trade Area of the Americas and was equally central in the predecessor Enterprise for the Americas Initiative. Since he left government, Mr. Huenemann has worked extensively on issues involving Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Americas, and the international financial institutions, including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and Inter-American Development Bank. He has been a visiting professor at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Business and Public Administration. He has also authored scholarly articles on trade issues, is a frequent speaker at conferences, and is often quoted in the press. He serves on the advisory board of notable international public policy research institutions, including the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin American Advisor. Mr. Huenemann received his graduate degree with honors from the American University. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Richard Stockton College in New Jersey. |
