Howard J. Wiarda is the Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations and head of the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia. He has had a long-time relationship with CSIS and is currently a visiting fellow working on Latin America, Eastern Europe, and East Asia issues and writing a book on American foreign policy. Professor Wiarda’s career has alternated between academia—Harvard, Georgetown, and George Washington Universities, the Universities of Massachusetts and Georgia, and MIT—and the Washington policy community—the American Enterprise Institute, State Department, National War College, and CSIS. A prolific author, his most recent books include The Crisis of American Foreign Policy (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006), Comparative Politics (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006), Dilemmas of Democracy in Latin America (Rowman & Littlefield, 2005), Civil Society (Westview, 2003), and a three-volume set of memoirs, Adventures in Research (iUniverse, 2006). Professor Wiarda is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has served as an adviser to four presidents.
