Anne Solomon’s professional work has focused on ways in which advances in science, technology, and public policy affect our national life and international relations. She currently serves as senior adviser on science and technology policy at the Center for the Study of the Presidency (CSP) in Washington, D.C., and as an independent adviser on public policy matters to public- and private-sector institutions. Prior to joining CSP, Solomon served as senior adviser for technology policy and director of the Biotechnology Program at CSIS. She began her career at the National Academies, directing the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People’s Republic of China during the early years of renewed U.S.-China ties. Subsequently, on leave from the National Academies, she served in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Carter administration, developing the first U.S.-China science and technology agreement and overseeing a range of federal science and technology programs. She returned to the National Academies to direct a bilateral U.S.-Japan dialogue and a number of studies concerned with international technology competition and collaboration. While at the National Academies, Solomon also developed and directed major initiatives to expand institutional outreach and nongovernmental funding. During the mid-1990s, she served at the Department of State as deputy assistant secretary of state for science, technology, and health. She also served as U.S. coordinator for international global positioning system (GPS) policy. Solomon holds an M.P.A. degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and studied Mandarin Chinese at the Yale-in-China Center in Hong Kong, SAR. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. |
