Julianne Smith is director of the CSIS Europe Program and the Initiative for a Renewed Transatlantic Partnership (RTP), where she leads the Center’s research and program activities on U.S.-European political, security, and economic relations and the ongoing process of European political and economic integration. She has authored or contributed to a number of CSIS books and reports, including Understanding Islamic Charities,The Transatlantic Climate Change Challenge, Muslim Integration: Challenging Conventional Wisdom in Europe and the United States (2007), Transforming NATO (…again): A Primer for the NATO Summit in Riga 2006 (2006), Five Years After 9/11: An Assessment of America’s War on Terror (2006), and America and the World in the Age of Terror (2005). She served as a lead investigator for the CSIS Project on European Defense Integration. Smith regularly writes for CSIS publications including Atlantic Outlook and codirects the Transatlantic Dialogue on Terrorism, which examines U.S.-European disagreements over the causes of terrorism. She is also an associate fellow at the London-based Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI). Before becoming director of the Europe Program, she served as deputy director and senior fellow in the CSIS International Security Program, where she oversaw the management of more than 30 security-related projects and focused on a range of European security issues, including European defense integration and EU-U.S. counterterrorism cooperation. Before joining CSIS, Smith worked at the German Marshall Fund, where she was a program officer for the Foreign Policy Program and director of communications for the Project on the Role of American Military Power. She has worked as a senior analyst on the European security desk of the British American Security Information Council and in Germany at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. She has received many fellowships, including the American Academy’s Public Policy Fellowship, the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship, and the Fredin Memorial Scholarship for study at the Sorbonne in Paris. She received her B.A. from Xavier University and her M.A. from American University.
