National security congressional relations; nuclear arms control issues
George Murphy most recently served as deputy director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency under President Reagan and as inspector general of the United States Information Agency under President Bush. Both appointments required the advice and consent of the Senate. Prior assignments include 28 years as a Senate staff member (executive director of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy and director of the Senate Office of Classified National Security Information). From 1958 to 1993 Murphy made over 40 trips overseas, primarily related to nuclear weapons and arms control. From 1950 to 1958 he served in the Central Intelligence Agency. During World War II he was a pilot in the Army Air Force with overseas duty in the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. Murphy holds an A.B. from Harvard University and was the first Senate staff member to be sponsored by the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.
