In signaling the contribution of Mexicans, Mr. Calderon is using a preemptive strategy aimed at "offsetting what might be a growing anti-Mexican sentiment in a country that's navigating through some hard, difficult economic times," said Armand Peschard Sverdrup, a Washington-based political consultant at Peschard & Associates. "There is a risk of a sharpening of anti-immigration sentiment in this country and up to now, that side of the story has yet to be heard in this country because nobody has been very effective in communicating that message."
