CSIS Celebrates World AIDS Day 2007 Recently released data from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) revealed that global HIV prevalence (the percentage of people living with HIV) has leveled off and that the number of new infections has declined. ( Geneva, November 20, 2007) According to UNAIDS, the new data reflects both improved epidemiological surveillance and analysis and the result of HIV prevention efforts. However, UNAIDS estimates that 33.2 million people are still living with HIV worldwide and approximately 2.1 million people died of AIDS this year. The revised data compels sustained attention to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and continued leadership and investment by the United States and other international donors on global HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment efforts. As Congress prepares for the reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which expires in 2008, the CSIS Task Force on HIV/AIDS has published several reports focusing on critical issues related to HIV prevention, gender, the health workforce shortage, injection drug use and the status of the epidemic in Russia, China, and India. All publications and event notices can be found at www.csis.org/hivaids. In honor of World AIDS Day 2007, the CSIS Task Force on HIV/AIDS will celebrate by hosting an event at CSIS highlighting the status of the epidemic in Russia, China, and India.
