China in Africa: In partnership with the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies, this initiative examines the implications of China's engagement in Africa for the United States and Africa. It strives to find areas where the United States, China, and Africa can collaborate for mutual benefit while investigating the primary drivers of U.S. and Chinese initiatives on the continent. The Africa Program has produced numerous reports on the topic and recently hosted a major conference in December 2007 that brought together senior Chinese, African, and U.S. policymakers to discuss the prospects for enhancing cooperation in the areas of public health, security assistance, corporate social responsibility, energy security, and resolving the crisis in the Sudan. In the project's next phase, the Africa Program hopes to travel to Africa to investigate China's on-the-ground presence in key countries and survey a broad range of African actors on the role of the Chinese in their respective countries.
