Montenegro's Vote for Independence
|
Montenegro voted May 21 for its independence from Serbia. To put the vote into a broader context, Janusz Bugajski, director of CSIS's New European Democracies Project (NEDP), answered a few questions. - What kind of impact will Montenegrin independence have on the ongoing Kosovo negotiations? Answer (mp3, 1:04)
- Is the Montenegrin case setting a precedent for the partition of other states?
Answer (mp3, :32) - How will Montenegrin independence impact overall stability and development in the Western Balkans? Answer (mp3, 1:19)
- What are the European prospects for the region? How will investor confidence be affected by these developments? Answer (mp3, 1:09)
Other Resources Bugajski also wrote a commentary on the vote. That commentary, Montenegro's Independence Helps Stabilize the Balkans, is available here. Another commentary by Bugajski and Milena Staneva, a research associate at CSIS, was published in the EU Observer. That commentary, titled Montenegrin Independence: What Does It Mean for Kosovo, is available here. NEDP also hosted two events leading up to the Montenegro vote: May 8, Montenegro on the Eve of the Independence Referendum Srdjan Darmanovic, director of the Montenegro-based Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM), examined the key political and social factors that helped determine the outcome of the referendum and reviewed the challenges faced by Podgorica both before and after the referendum. March 16, Montenegro's Approaching Independence Referendum Miodrag Vlahovic, Montenegro’s minister of foreign affairs, outlined the international and domestic context of the referendum. The project also publishes a newsletter on Montenegrin issues. The latest issue of the U.S.-Montenegrin Policy Briefing is available here. Past issues are available in the archives. |
