The G-8 Summit in St. Petersburg


Russia hosted this year's G-8 Summit and the agenda for the annual meeting was broader than ever. Trade and economics, energy, human rights, and HIV/AIDS were but a few of the issues that awaited the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Assessing the G-8 Global Partnership: From Kananaskis to St. Petersburg
This report by the CSIS-led Strengthening the Global Partnership (SGP) project examines the progress made to date by the G-8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction in securing and reducing the WMD complex, weapons, and materials in Russia and elsewhere. At the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, world leaders announced their commitment of $20 billion over 10 years to be dedicated to preventing catastrophic terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Global Partnership Scorecard 2006
This scorecard of progress on cooperative threat reduction programs in Russia under the G8 Global Partnership gives a snapshot of work completed, in progress and accomplished by program area for easy reference. It was published by the Strengthening the Global Partnership (SGP) project at CSIS.

Colonel-General Yevgeny Maslin, retired Chief of the 12th GUMO (main directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense), gave remarks on the security of Russian nuclear weapons and materials. Laura Holgate, vice president of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, discussed U.S.-Russian cooperation on the "global cleanout" challenge and opportunities for the Russian G-8 presidency.
