Gender
This project seeks to identify the prevalence, correlates and consequences of gender-based harassment and discrimination among the younger generation of females in Russia. We are especially interested in understanding the impact of such experiences on aspirations and on attainment in education and employment. Through focus groups and a national level random sample survey in the 2007-2008 period, we will explore how attitudes toward gender in Russian society are experienced, reproduced or challenged by young Russian females. In short, how common is it for young women to experience harassment or discrimination? What forms are most common?  Do they view such behavior as legitimate or acceptable?  What is their knowledge of the legality of different forms of harassment and discrimination?  How do these experiences affect their educational and employment goals and choices?  What kinds of messages and campaigns might effectively raise awareness and address these issues?  This project is undertaken in collaboration with the Gender Studies Program at the European University in St. Petersburg.
