Georgia's January 2005 request to the United States and the European Union to assist it in implementing a peace proposal for South Ossetia capped a seven-year effort to directly engage states other than Russia in Georgia's conflict resolution efforts. While there is no guarantee that increased Western engagement will succeed in reunifying Georgia, taking Georgia's South Ossetia peace initiative seriously is an excellent first step towards that goal.
