Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, may well wish the country’s March 14th parliamentary elections would go away. Even minimally free elections for the Majles risks a de facto referendum on President Ahmedinejad’s economic policies, which are widely perceived as disastrous. Controlling the elections too tightly encourages accusations of a setup, even by Iranian standards. There may be no way to play it exactly right.
