Since 2001, when Beijing won the bid for the 2008 Olympics, China has pursued three goals: (1) maintaining the country’s ongoing process of reform and development, and addressing pressing problems; (2) demonstrating to the world its modernization and socioeconomic transformation, accomplished through the country’s “peaceful development” or “peaceful rise”; and (3) successfully organizing and managing a world-class event like the Olympic Games.
