Program OverviewThe energy landscape is quickly evolving. Sustained economic growth in OECD countries coupled with rapid growth of developing economies will demand ever increasing supplies of energy. The world is not short on resources to meet these demand needs, but must balance an evolving set of challenges and opportunities to develop and bring to market energy supplies that are economic, secure and clean. Most projections indicate continued reliance on fossil fuels to meet a significant portion of primary energy demand, a reality that becomes particularly challenging in a carbon constrained future. In this context, policymakers require new tools that will provide a thoughtful framework for investment and encourage international cooperation and engagement on this global energy challenge. The core mission of the CSIS Energy and National Security Program is to offer these tools by leading research on emerging energy issues and delivering insightful independent analyses that both educate and drive effective policy. The team is composed of scholars with a wide range of professional experience in the private and public sectors as well as firsthand regional expertise. These experts work to identify key elements, opportunities and challenges in a changing geopolitical energy map and frame debate on issues in terms of relevant economic, environmental and political imperatives. The Energy and National Security Program places emphasis on strategic forward-thinking to formulate innovative yet pragmatic policy recommendations. The Energy and National Security Program is engaged in several projects and studies: Alternative Transportation Fuels and Vehicle Technologies
The Alternative Transportation Fuels and Vehicle Technologies Project convened experts from government, industry and academia to discuss the menu of fuel and technology choices available to meet the future energy challenges posed by transportation. Learn more about Alternative Transportation Fuels and Vehicle Technologies. Energy Security and Climate Change This project, drawing from a partnership with the World Resources Institute, will develop a policy strategy for the next administration to address energy security and climate change both domestically and internationally.
