May 19 U.S.- Spain Bilateral Dialogue
On May 19, the CSIS Europe Program and the Madrid-based Real Instituto Elcano will co-host the 2008 U.S.-Spain Bilateral Dialogue.  This year's dialogue will mark a critical time in U.S.-Spanish relations.  Following the strain in ties in the aftermath of Spain's troop withdrawal from Iraq in 2004, both countries now stand at an opportunity to rebuild  a strong, strategic partnership in light of the March general elections in Spain and the upcoming U.S. presidential elections.  How will the new U.S. administration and Spainish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's second-term government address the myriad crisises in the Middle East,  the war against terrorism, and a looming global economic crisis? The U.S.-Spain Bilateral Dialogue will seek to answer these adn other critical questions by providing analysis from key U.S. and Spanish foreign policy, economic, and security experts during a day-long conference in Madrid.
May 1 Preparing for It's 60th Anniversary: A Look at NATO's Future Roles and Missions in Advance of the Franco-German Summit in 2009
The Europe Program, in partnership with the Hans Seidel Foundation, hosted a Senior European Dialogue featuring Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, member of the German Bundestag.  Just a few weeks after the conclusion of its Bucharest Summit, the Alliance is beginnign to prepare for its 60th anniversary summit in 2009.  Co-hosted by France adn Germany, NATO's next summit will tackle a long list of strategic and tactical challenges, including capability shortfalls, the possible redrafting of NATO's Strategic Concept (last updated in 1999), relations with Russia, enlargement, missile defense, global partnerships, and the Alliance's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan.  France is also expected to announce its full integration into NATO.  Dr. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg shared his views on many of these issues (including insight into what transpired in Bucharest) and previewed Germany's key objectives as it prepares to co-host NATO allies in 2009. 
April 16 Looking Ahead to November 2008: Transatlantic Relations Under the Next U.S. Presidential Administration
As the United States prepares for the November 2008 presidential elections, key European allies focus on the potential continuities and divergences from currrent U.S. foreign policy.  To be sure, the transatlantic partners will continue to face a set of critical global challenges - from stabilization efforts in Afghanistan, to global warming, rising energy prices, and the threat of a nuclearly armed Iran - no matter who enters the Oval Office in January 2009. In an effort to hightlight the foreign policy agendas of the three leading presidential candidates, the Europe Program hosted a meeting between a delegation of German foreign policy experts and the foreign policy advisors to each presidential campaing.  The off-the-record meeting addressed the core issues dominating the U.S. foreign policy agenda and provided the particiapnts with a unique opportunity to examine these issues in a transatlantic context. 
March 25 CSIS Press Briefing: President’s trip to NATO Summit

The briefing will be presented by: Stephen J. Flanagan, CSIS senior vice president. Dr. Flanagan is a former special assistant to the president and senior director for Central and Eastern Europe, National Security Council Staff. Julianne Smith, CSIS Europe Program director. Janusz Bugajski, director of the CSIS New European Democracies Project.
January 30 Mid-Course Corrections for NATO's Mission in Afghanistan
The CSIS Europe Program, in partnership with the Embassy of Germany, hosted a confernece on the challenges facing NATO security and stabilization efforts in Afghanistan.  The off-the-record session included remarks by Kurt Volker, Principal Assistant Deputy Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, U.S. Department of State; Maj. Gen. Manfred Lange, Assistant Chief of Staff, Politico-Military Affairs, German Federal Ministry of Defense; and General (Ret.) James L. Jones, President & CEO, Institute for 21st Centurty Energy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and former Supreme Allied Commander Europe.  The participants discussed current stabilization efforts, as well as ways of improving cooperation among NATO allies in this important mission. 
January 18 Transatlantic Briefing with Hugh Roberts
The CSIS Europe Program hosted a Transatlantic Briefing with Hugh Roberts, former Director of the North Africa Project at the International Crisis Group. Dr. Roberts discussed the topic of "Muslim Alienation, Violence, and the Problem of Identity Politics in Europe Today." AUDIO (mp3, 01:25:39)
January 10 Report launch for "Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World"
The CSIS Europe and International Security Programs, in partnership with the Noaber Foundation, hosted the launch of "Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing the Transatlantic Partnership," a new report authored by Gen. Dr. Klaus Naumann (Germany), Gen. John Shalikashvili (United States), Field Marshal The Lord Inge (United Kingdom), Adm. Jacques Lanxade (France), and Gen. Henk van den Breemen (the Netherlands), with Benjamin Bilski and Douglas Murray.  The event also featured commentary by Robert E. Hunter, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO.
