About ISP

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) International Security Program (ISP) – formerly the Center’s Political-Military Program – enjoys a long and proud tradition. Founded by Admiral Arleigh Burke almost four decades ago, the program has been a mainstay of CSIS since its inception. During a year that brought international security issues painfully to the home front, ISP intensified its efforts in 2001 to build a dynamic and experienced team of defense and foreign policy experts here at CSIS. As a result of these efforts, ISP is now home to one of the strongest teams covering global security issues in the think tank community.  Twenty senior advisers and fellows combine to make ISP a constant source of reliable analysis on the threats and opportunities shaping U.S. security interests. With varied backgrounds in government service, academia, journalism, the military, business, and the non-profit sector, the ISP team is uniquely qualified to tackle the major security issues confronting the United States today and beyond.

The International Security Program boasts a staff of over 60 in-house scholars and researchers, taking on one of the most robust and ambitious research agendas in the field. Building upon a solid foundation of conventional political-military issues, ISP is likewise committed to addressing a growing range of non-military aspects defining U.S. foreign and security policy.

Throughout 2005, ISP launched over a dozen new research initiatives focusing on an exceptionally broad array of defense, strategy, and regional security issues. These ongoing projects range from the traditional—terrorism, the spread of weapons of mass destruction, the role of alliances, and military transformation—to the non-traditional—reconstructing war-torn societies, the image of China in the U.S. political imagination, bioterrorism, and building a healthy defense industry.
