Bridging Strategic Asia: The Rise of India in East Asia and the Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance
On March 17-18, 2005, CSIS conducted a conference in cooperation with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) of India, with support from The Japan Foundation, Center for Global Partnership entitled “Bridging Strategic Asia: The Rise of India in East Asia and the Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance.”  The conference involved 30 former senior government officials, specialists, and business representatives from the United States and India to discuss respective perspectives on East Asian affairs and bilateral relations during a period when India’s engagement of East Asia and U.S.-India relations gained momentum and were starting to overcome a troubled history extending back to the Cold War.  The conference highlighted India’s growing economic and security ties with Southeast Asia and Japan, and its rapidly expanding relationship with China.  The conference also made clear that the United States, India, and Japan are pursuing strikingly similar security objectives in the region to India’s east.

Phase II of this project will continue the examination of how the U.S.-Japan alliance may be applied to relations with India, a critical and rising new player in East Asian affairs.  The study will include two conferences involving leading representatives from the three countries to evaluate respective bilateral relations and evaluate common perspectives on key regional security challenges.  A corollary purpose of the initiative is to facilitate contact among a younger generation of experts to build a network that may form the basis for continued interaction and dialogue among the three countries in the future.

On June 28-29, 2007, CSIS in partnership with the Japan Institute of International Affairs hosted a private two-day meeting to continue the process of interaction between the three countries through dialogue on international security issues between a select number of younger U.S., Japanese and Indian foreign policy and security specialists.
