Japan Chair Forum: Ambassador Fujisaki, "The G-8 Hokkaido-Toyako Summit an Overview"
AUDIO (mp3, 00:41:00) Ambassador Fujisaki's association with America goes back to junior high school, when his father was assigned to Seattle. After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1969, he studied at Brown and Stanford Universities. He then served in Jakarta and in Paris before working in London. In Tokyo, Amb. Fujisaki held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as in the Budget Bureau of the Ministry of Finance. In 1994 he was Deputy Director-General in the Asian Affairs Bureau and then served as Minister in the Japanese Embassy in Washington. In 1999 he became the Director-General for the North American Affairs Bureau and was later promoted to Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Fujisaki served as the "sherpa" for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the G-8 Summit meetings and most recently was Japan's permanent representative to the U.N. organizations in Geneva.

Smart Power Speaker Series: "Smart Leadership: A Book Conversation"

Nye Jr., CSIS Trustee, Distinguished Service Professor from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government; Susan Eisenhower, Chairman of Leadership and Public Policy Programs at The Eisenhower Institute; David Sanger, White House Correspondent from The New York Times; and Brent Scowcroft, CSIS Trustee and President of the Scowcroft Group for a discussion on Dr. Nye's new book, "The Powers to Lead," and how leadership is critical to the effective implementation of Smart Power. Michael J. Green, Senior Advisor and Japan Chair at CSIS, chaired the session. "The Powers to Lead" should be required reading for anyone interested in assessing the leadership qualities of CEOs, cabinet secretaries, or the next president of the United States.

Graduating the National Defense Academy in 1970, he joined the Self Defense Forces as Ensign. He was promoted to the rank of Admiral in 2005, and thus far in his career, Admiral Saito has served as Director of the Operations and Plans Department, Commandant of the Maizuru and Yokosuka Districts, and as Chief of Staff of the Marine Self Defense Forces.
