"The greatest leaders are transformational — the ones that are truly creative, rather than simply transactional or merely managerial."

DAVID M. ABSHIRE Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency
"A true leader must be able to lead the group, not with authority or power, but with philosophy and character.  Only a leader who is selfless, has a dedicated attitude toward serving the group, maintains a philosophy that resonates with every individual in the group, and indicates a clear direction for the group to follow, will successfully unite a group under his leadership."

KAZUO INAMORI A Passion for Success

Five years ago, David Abshire and Kazuo Inamori stood side-by-side CSIS President and CEO John Hamre, and Chairman of the CSIS Board of Trustees Sam Nunn and made a commitment to invest CSIS in grooming young leaders.  Coming from opposite sides of the Pacific, Abshire and Inamori shared the idea that strength of character and inspired creativity are the crucial components that separate good people from great leaders.

Since April 2002, hundreds of student interns and young professionals just starting their careers, as well as aspiring leaders from overseas have taken part in the academy's leadership development programs.  AILA has caught on at CSIS because of its practical approach—empowering young people with the leadership tools that will help build their confidence in the rambunctious global atmosphere of 21st centure politics.

AILA has added a new dimension to CSIS by carrying forth the extraordinary legacy of Abshire and Inamori. Read More

-Luis Pinto, CSIS Research Assistant, 2005

"I have done two prior internships, and neither offered such a diverse and attentive intern program as CSIS."
-Olga Zaretsky, Summer Intern, 2004

"Without exception, every one of those individuals will look back at their experiences here at CSIS, and specifically with AILA, as forming the foundations for their successes in later life."
-Lt. Col. Stephen Sklenka, USMC
 CSIS Military Fellow, 2006-07
