Following the Treaty of Shimonoseki, the Qing Court orders then-governor of Taiwan, Tang Ching-sung, to retreat with his associates to China. Instead, Tang declares Taiwan to be independent, and two days later is inaugurated as the president of the Republic. Four days after that, Japanese forces land and Tang, disguised as an old woman, flees to China.
