On January 10, 1946, U.S. General George Marshall successfully mediates a truce between the KMT and CCP. However, subsequent CCP-KMT disagreements and cease-fire violations result in U.S. abandonment of mediation efforts on January 29, 1947, and the withdrawal of the U.S. mission. The United States suspends military aid to the KMT but continues its program of economic assistance.
