On February 28, 1947, the arrest and beating of a woman illegally selling cigarettes sparks widespread protests in Taiwan against KMT repression and corruption. An island-wide suppression by the KMT army results in the deaths of tens of thousands of people (also known as the "228 Massacre") and the beginning of martial law in Taiwan that will last until 1987.
