The Dutch erect Fort Zeelandia in southwestern Taiwan on a narrow peninsula they call "Tayouan" (terrace bay); "Tayouan" later evolved to "Taiwan" and became the name of the entire island. Two years later, the Spanish arrive in northern Taiwan but are eventually expelled by the Dutch. Dutch control of the island lasts until Taiwan is invaded by remnants of the fallen Ming Dynasty.
