After a July 22, 1958, announcement of a new campaign to liberate Taiwan, the PRC resumes bombardment of KMT held islands off the coast on August 23, 1958. The PRC claims all territory within 12 miles of its coast including Jinmen (Quemoy) and Matsu and begins a blockade of the area. In response the United States sends additional forces to join the Seventh Fleet.
