In spring 1962, Chiang Kai-shek, determined to take advantage of domestic unrest in the PRC accompanying widespread famine, begins to prepare for an attack on the mainland. In response, China builds up forces in Fujian Province opposite the islands of Jinmen (Quemoy) and Matsu. President John F. Kennedy reaffirms support of the Republic of China, but also reassures China that the United States will not support an invasion, ending the crisis.
