After a fierce sea battle, Qing forces, led by a rebellious general of Cheng Chen-kung, Shih Lang, defeat the Tungnin Kingdom. The third emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi, annexes the island of Taiwan and convinces the Qing Court to incorporate it into the territory of Manchus as a "protector of the inner provinces" of China. Administratively, Taiwan was made a prefecture of Fujian and remained under nominal Chinese rule for the next 212 years.
