CSIS experts conduct research and analysis and develop policy initiatives that are organized around more than 25 programs grouped under three themes: |
| Defense and Security Policy |
| Currently devoting over a third of its resources to security issues, CSIS
has chosen to focus both on the traditional drivers of national
security, defense policy and organization, and some of the most
important new dimensions of international security, such as
post-conflict reconstruction, proliferation, and homeland security.

| Global Challenges |
| A growing and more mobile population and advances in economics and technology have exposed the inability of nationally-organized governments to respond to transnational challenges. A large number of international organizations, multinational corporations and non-governmental entities now exert significant influence over international affairs. The Center examines not only how traditional nation-states themselves deal with problems that cross national boundaries, but also how they relate to this new and powerful group of actors.
