Research Focus

Securing existing weapons and materials, strengthening international nonproliferation regimes and guarding against the spread of dangerous technologies to new states or non-state actors remain among the highest priorities for those concerned with international peace and prosperity.

The International Security Program (ISP) houses the majority of CSIS's work in this area. Strengthening the Global Partnership is a consortium of 23 research institutes working together to build political and financial support for the G-8's Global Partnership Initiative. The Congressional Proliferation Prevention Forum provides Congress with independent information and analysis through a series of briefings and technical workshops. Heading off an Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program examines creative, workable solutions for solving this crisis. The Changing Face of Proliferation examines future technology and policy trends that affect WMD proliferation. Program on New Approaches to Russian Security (PONARS) focuses partly on the challenges of proliferation. The Burke Chair in Strategy provides detailed estimates of patterns in proliferation, arms control, and arms transfers, and  the impact those patterns have on regional military balances.

Robert Einhorn, a senior adviser at CSIS, answered a few questions on the latest developments with North Korea. Watch the video interview. Iran's Weapons of Mass Destruction includes an analysis of Iran's chemical, biological, and nuclear capabilities. Black Dawn was a scenario-based exercise on catastrophic terrorism that brought together current and former senior leaders from various states and organizations.
