Russia and Eurasia Program

Central Asia

The states of Central Asia - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - have become increasingly well-known to Western audiences, especially after the attacks of September 11. Interest in Central Asia's energy resources and its strategic location between South Asia, China, Russia, and Iran has been matched by interest in regional access for military and humanitarian operations in Afghanistan and concern about transborder terrorist activity and the potential rise of Islamic extremism. Regime change in Kyrgyzstan and authoritarian retrenchment in Uzbekistan (accompanied by the eviction of U.S. troops) have offered new opportunities and challenges for those who seek engagement with Central Asia and wish to promote the region's further political and economic development.

The Russia and Eurasia program offers analysis of the key issues and trends affecting domestic and regional politics in Central Asia and U.S. interests in the region.
