The South Asia program at CSIS, led by Ambassador Teresita Schaffer, focuses on the region comprised of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan.  This area is currently undergoing major geopolitical changes and in recent years has become increasingly prominent in the global community.  The U.S.-India nuclear agreement of 2006 illuminates the region’s growing importance to the United States.

The South Asia program undertakes projects focusing on geopolitics, strategic affairs, and public health. In addition to a monthly newsletter, The South Asia Monitor, the program regularly holds conferences, seminars, and briefings on a variety of pertinent regional issues. The Policy Council on India, is a membership based group that provides a forum for informed, high level deliberation on the increasingly dynamic relationship between the United States and India. In 2006, the South Asia program will focus its activities on issues that affect the shape of regional relations and the region's ties with the United States over the next two decades.
