Program Overview The CSIS Turkey Project was established in June 1994 as the first program in Washington D.C. focusing exclusively on Turkey. Through its continuous tracking and analysis of Turkish developments and its regular Turkey Updates, the Turkey Project has made a significant contribution to the policy debate about Turkey in Washington. At the core of the Turkey Project are meetings with high-level Turkish policymakers and officials. The attendees include U.S. officials from the various agencies directly involved in formulating and implementing policy towards Turkey, as well as executives from major corporations with an interest in the Turkish economy. From their inception, the Turkey Project meetings have helped to complement the policy and investment-related discussions in government offices and corporate boardrooms. The distinguished visitors from Turkey to CSIS Turkey Project meetings during the past decade include current Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul and Economy Minister Ali Babacan, as well as previous prime ministers Tansu Ciller and Mesut Yilmaz, foreign ministers Emre Gonensay and Ismail Cem, ministers for the economy Hikmet Ulugbay and Isin Celebi, and energy minister Ziya Aktas. The long list of speakers also includes many other leading Turkish politicians and parliamentarians, senior officials, businessmen and analysts. Because of its geographic location straddling the straits, which divide Europe and Asia and its ethnic links with the newly independent energy-rich Caspian Sea countries, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, Turkey has emerged as a pivotal player in efforts to bring Caspian oil and gas to world markets. The Turkey Project has been cooperating with the Energy Program in organizing meetings of the CSIS Caspian Sea Energy Project to follow developments. These have been accompanied by periodic analyses in the Caspian Energy Update.
