The first holder of the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy is Simon Serfaty. CSIS established the Brzezinski Chair in July 2003 to advance understanding in the fields of geostrategy, international security, European affairs, and global politics. Reflecting Zbigniew Brzezinski's personal achievements during a career including public service, teaching, and writing, the chair is awarded to a leading scholar in the fields of geostrategy, international security, and global politics. The Chair's flagship activity for 2008-2009 is A Global Dialogue Between the European Union and the United States. This project addresses five broad issues that represent serious challenges for the states of the Euro-Atlantic community but lend themselves especially well to ever-closer relations, consultation, and cooperation between the EU and the United States:
- The problems of stabilization and reconstruction, and the management of failing states;
- The risks of energy scarcity, and their implications for affluent states;
- The challenges of climate change, and the survival of endangered states;
- The new modalities of economic governance, and the role of transforming states; and
- The dilemmas of weapons of mass destruction, and their proliferation to rogue states;
The project, which is made possible by funding from the European Commission, continues the discussion begun with the Brzezinski Chair's 2006-2007Global Euro-Atlantic Dialogue About the U.S., the EU, and NATO in the 21st Century and the 2005 Think Tank Summit. The activities of the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy are made possible by generous support from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation. |
