Evaluations of the Tonkin Gulf incident continue to ignore eyewitness testimony

A prominent conspiracy scenario alleges that top government figures – including President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara – were less than forthright or entirely honest about what led to increased U.S. involvement in Vietnam, particularly the Gulf of Tonkin incident. During the August l964 attacks, I was very much in the operations and intelligence loop as chief of staff for Vice Adm. Roy Johnson,commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, and I’d like to demolish some of the myths.
