CSIS Americas Program Conference Report

One-Day Workshop on Transnational Organized Crime in Central America

On April 19, 2016, CSIS hosted a one-day conference in Guatemala City, Guatemala, with 15 Central American academics, investigative journalists, and former combatants to gain their insight on alternative governance models in the Northern Triangle. The primary objective was to gain Central American perspectives on the CSIS report, Alternative Governance in the Northern Triangle and Implications for U.S. Foreign Policy: Finding Logic Within Chaos, published in September 2015. While the report generated significant discussion in the Washington, D.C., political establishment, it had not been translated into Spanish or widely circulated in Central America. The CSIS Americas Program felt the value of the report would be greatly enhanced if the work itself were translated for circulation among Central American academics, field research practitioners, and policymakers.
