European Defense Trends: Briefing Update

A key determinant for European defense capabilities is the European defense market, which consists of three main elements: national defense budgets, the European defense acquisition regulatory environment, and the European defense and security industrial base. The National Security Program on Industry and Resources conducted its third in-depth analysis of these three components and their interplay in a December 2012 report, titled European Defense Trends 2012: Budgets, Regulatory Frameworks, and the Industrial Base.

The briefing provides an update on the key national defense budgetary trends for the 37 European countries analyzed in the December 2012 report, incorporating newly available data for 2012 and 2013, as well as a brief analysis of Russian defense spending over the same time period (2001-2013). This briefing also provides key data indicators for the health of the European defense and security industrial base.
