India's Economy: The Other Half

U.S.-India Insight: February 2012

This edition of U.S.-India Insight focuses on women in the Indian economy, particularly the issue of women in the workplace. Although the Indian economy has been an impressive engine for growth in recent years, a large percentage of its potential work force remains sidelined. While females are represented well in the IT/BPO sector and a handful of others, this is not the case for the bulk of the formal economy. Government and industry should work closely in order to increase inclusiveness, and attract "the other half" to the work place. The benefits to India's economic development will be significant and long-lasting.
